For the aerodynamics of a wing, this is a very good video worth watching. How Does A Wing Actually Work? Here's another video worth watching that explains and demonstrates how sails work. It's worth showing to your students. Exploratorium Science at America's Cup: "Sailing 101"

A sail is not shaped like a wing. Instead it is thin like a piece of paper and the distance across the windward side of the sail is the same as the distance across the leeward side and therefor the air on the leeward side travels the same distance as the air on the windward side. Therefor the air on both sides of the sail need to travel the same distance. There is no difference in pressure caused by a difference in distance between the two sides of the sail. The air is being deflected by the curved sail because it is curved. The force required to deflect the air is created by the sail, and the air is generating an equal and opposite force on the sail which is pulling the sail sideways and forward. The sideways component of this force is counteracted by the keel while the forward component is not, allowing the forward component to act upon the boat pulling the boat forward.

Good point, well made - it depends on the type of jetski, year, make and model that you have, if you look in the operating manual it will tell you the correct way in which to rotate the craft.

arent you supposed to the turn the craft once upside down to anti clockwise from the back to avoid water from entering the engine through the exhaust.?

Very helpful video. I have a bit of confusion on the stream flow direction. I remember that if you have a southwest wind, then it is coming from the southwest. If you have a southwest current flow, then it is flowing to the southwest. Now, if you have a stream flow of 225 which is southwest, and you are in a dead boat, would you be drifting towards the southwest, or away from the southwest. Is the stream compass heading of 225 a heading or a reciprical?
